Roberts was born 1881 in Perryville, Kentucky. Attended the University of Chicago in her late 30s and received a Ph.B. in 1921. A member of the Poetry Club in Chicago, she was friends with Yvor Winters, Janet Lewis, Pearl Andelson Sherry, and Maurice Lesemann. After completing her degree, she returned to Springfield, Kentucky, where she remained the rest of her life. Her first novel, THE TIME OF MAN, was published in 1926 and received critical and popular acclaim. She went on to publish eight novels, one volume of short stories, and two volumes of poetry. Much of her work, including THE GREAT MEADOW (1930) and BLACK IS MY TRUELOVE'S HAIR (1938), reflects her Kentucky background. She died in 1941.
Sherry was born in Chicago in 1899. She worked as a reader and reviewer for POETRY MAGAZINE. She has published two collections of poetry, FRINGE and ARCH OF A CIRCLE (with Doris Vidaver). She has also contributed to "Dial, " "Gyroscope, " and the "Southern Review."
