Irish politician,

O'Connell was born in County Kerry and educated in France. He was admitted to the bar and became a leader in the movement for Catholic emancipation. O'Connell was elected to Parliament, and in 1841 became lord mayor of Dublin. Known as "The Liberator" he fought for repeal of the union between Britain and Ireland.
