Charles Anthoni Johnson Brooke succeeded his uncle, James Brooke, as the benevolent white Rajah of Sarawak in 1863. Born in England as Charles Anthoni Johnson, he inherited Sarawak due to his uncle's childlessness and changed his name to Brooke. A keen administrator, he built upon the successes of his colorful uncle, outlawing slavery, encouraging trade, increasing the size of Sarawak, and fighting piracy and head-hunting. He was popular in Sarawak, and improved relations with England.
