Biographical History

Sir Charles Brookes, 1829-1917, born Charles Johnson left England 1852 to serve under his uncle Sir James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak, whom he succeeded in 1868.

From the description of Diary [microform]. (Libraries Australia). WorldCat record id: 225845811

Charles Anthoni Johnson Brooke succeeded his uncle, James Brooke, as the benevolent white Rajah of Sarawak in 1863. Born in England as Charles Anthoni Johnson, he inherited Sarawak due to his uncle's childlessness and changed his name to Brooke. A keen administrator, he built upon the successes of his colorful uncle, outlawing slavery, encouraging trade, increasing the size of Sarawak, and fighting piracy and head-hunting. He was popular in Sarawak, and improved relations with England.

From the description of Charles Johnson Brooke letter to Roger Eykyn, 1888 July 28. (Pennsylvania State University Libraries). WorldCat record id: 63173084
