Sir Charles Brookes, 1829-1917, born Charles Johnson left England 1852 to serve under his uncle Sir James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak, whom he succeeded in 1868.
Charles Anthoni Johnson Brooke succeeded his uncle, James Brooke, as the benevolent white Rajah of Sarawak in 1863. Born in England as Charles Anthoni Johnson, he inherited Sarawak due to his uncle's childlessness and changed his name to Brooke.
