Professor, librarian, and president of Columbia College (N.Y.), 1842-1849.

Having unsuccessfully attempted in May, 1845, to resign a college presidency assumed out of a sense of duty, Nathaniel Fish Moore escaped in July, 1845, for a six-week tour to the upper Mississippi. Sixty-three years old, Moore travelled by steamboat, train, and stage up the Hudson River and west to Buffalo, across the Great Lakes to Detroit and Chicago, west to Galena, up the Mississippi to St. Peter and down to St. Louis, southwest to the Missouri iron country, up the Ohio River, and home to New York.

From the description of Journey by way of Buffalo and the lakes to the falls of St. Anthony : and return thence by way of St. Louis and the Ohio River in the autumn of 1845, 1845 July 3 - Sept. 20. (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 35233184
