Moore, Nathaniel Fish, 1782-1872

Professor, librarian, and president of Columbia College (N.Y.), 1842-1849.

Having unsuccessfully attempted in May, 1845, to resign a college presidency assumed out of a sense of duty, Nathaniel Fish Moore escaped in July, 1845, for a six-week tour to the upper Mississippi. Sixty-three years old, Moore travelled by steamboat, train, and stage up the Hudson River and west to Buffalo, across the Great Lakes to Detroit and Chicago, west to Galena, up the Mississippi to St. Peter and down to St. Louis, southwest to the Missouri iron country, up the Ohio River, and home to New York.
