General Rufus Ingalls (1820-1893), went to Oregon in 1849 as quartermaster with the rank of captain, under Major Hathaway, who established the post at Fort Vancouver.

Rufus Ingalls, soldier and West Point graduate, served in the Mexican War and on the Western frontier. He became a quartermaster in 1848, and served in that position until the end of his career. In 1854, Ingalls accompanied the Steptoe Expedition west from Washington, D.C. The expedition was diverted for a winter to Salt Lake City to investigate circumstances surrounding the Gunnison Massacre. During his service in the Civil War, Ingalls was breveted to the rank of Brigadier General. Ingalls retired from the military in 1883, and died in 1893.
