Idaho pioneer.
Son of Col. Benjamin L. Beall, career army officer and commander of the Dept. of the Columbia at the onset of the Civil War, Thomas B. Beall was employed in the 1850's as an army wagon master at Fort Tejon, Calif., and in Washington, where he participated in Col. Steptoe's 1858 expedition across the Snake River. Beall went to work for the Indian Dept. in 1859, building the agency for the Nez Percé at Lapwai, Idaho, under agent A.J. Cain. After an interlude as a ferry operator and miner (1862 to the late 1860's), Beall returned to the Nez Percé Agency at Lapwai as superintendent of farming and remained there until 1871.
