Doty, James Duane, 1799-1865
Variant namesJames Duane Doty (1799-1865) was a lawyer, judge, and government official. He represented Wisconsin in Congress between 1838 and 1841, and again between 1849 and 1853. He was governor of Wisconsin Territory between 1841 and 1844, and served as the governor of Utah Territory between 1863 and 1865.

James Duane Doty was born in November 5, 1799. He was a lawyer and a judge in the state of Michigan from 1819 to 1833. He served as a member of Congress from Wisconsin from 1838 through 1841 and was the governor of the Wisconsin territory from 1841 through 1844. In 1863 he became the governor of the Utah territory until 1865. Doty passed away while he was in office on June 13, 1865.

Wisconsin politician and land speculator.
Born in New York, James Duane Doty practised law in Michigan Territory beginning in 1819 and served (1823-1832) as a judge of the judicial district of Northern Michigan, which included the territory west of Lake Michigan. Having settled at Green Bay, Doty spent the 1830's exploring and mapping Wisconsin in preparation for his land speculations in the region. Doty served as Wisconsin's delegate in Congress, 1839-1841, governor of Wisconsin Territory, 1841-1844, and congressional representative for the state, 1849-1853. From 1861 until his death in 1865, Doty was Utah's superintendent of Indian affairs and governor.
