Julius Deutsch was an Austrian Jew who was a Social Democratic politician, serving in various roles until 1934 when he fled Austria during the Uprising. He served as General of Republican troops in the Spanish Civil War from 1936-1939 and in 1940 fled France for the United States. In 1946 he returned to Austria and was head of the Sozialistische Verlagsanstalten (socialist publishing group).
