Ford Madox Brown was a painter, affiliated with the Pre-Raphaelites but never a member. Born in Calais to British parents, his education was informal but his artistic talent was nurtured by studies throughout Europe. He lived and painted in Paris, later moving to England in search of a patron, and his reputation as a painter grew steadily. He influenced Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and was himself influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites; he became known for his bright, realistic landscapes and historical paintings. His later work has a more formal structure, and he also created designs for stained glass windows. Three of his children exhibited watercolors and oils, and his grandson, Ford Madox Ford, was an accomplished author.
