Eli Thayer (1819-1899) was a Worcester, Mass., educator and U.S. Congressman, 1857-1861. He organized the Emigrant Aid Company, which sponsored the settlement of Kansas by New Englanders in 1855. A graduate of the Worcester Manual Labor School (now Worcester Academy) in 1840 and Brown University in 1845, Thayer became a pioneer in the field of women's education and an ardent abolitionist.

Educator and politician, Thayer organized the Emigrant Aid company in New England (1850s) to resettle citizens holding an anti-slavery position into slaves states, a plan which was particularly successful in Kansas.
