Jones, Seaborn, 1788-1864
Variant namesSeaborn Jones was born in Augusta, Georgia on 1 February 1788. He studied law at Princeton University and was admitted to the bar in 1808 and soon established a legal practice in Milledgeville, Georgia. In 1817, he was appointed solicitor general of the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit and by the 1920s he moved to Columbus, Georgia and was named the solicitor general of Georgia. Jones was a dedicated Democrat and was elected to the United States Congress and served two terms from 1833 to 1835 and from 1845 to 1847. He died in Columbus on 18 March 1864.

Seaborn Jones, Jr. (1788-1864), lawyer, politician, and planter, born in Augusta (Ga.) but moved to Muscogee County around 1825. His daughter, Mary Howard Jones, married Henry L. Benning (1814-1875) who became a partner in Seaborn Jones' law practice. Benning also raised the 17th Georgia Infantry Regiment and served as its leader during the Civil War eventually earning the rank Brigadier General.
