Lewis Steiner (1827-1892) was born in Frederick, MD. He received his M.D. degree in 1849. From 1852 to 1860 Steiner taught chemistry at George Washington University. He was chief inspector of the United States Sanitary Commission in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War and served as president of the American Academy of Medicine in 1877.

Lewis Henry Steiner (1827-1892) was an American physician and librarian. He helped to organize the Maryland College of Pharmacy where he held the chair in chemistry. During the Civil War he was an inspector for the United States Sanitary Commission. He was appointed in 1884 librarian of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, a post he held until 1892.

During the Civil War he was an inspector for the United States Sanitary Commission for the northern Maryland region. He was appointed in 1884 librarian of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, a post he held until 1892.
