Swift's diary begins with recording President Buchanan's proclamation making January 4, 1861, a day of fasting and prayer throughout the United States, asking God to subdue to secession movement. The diaries document his movements from New York to Philadelphia to Baltimore, Washington, and Fort Monroe. He writes about family matters and Army life.

Swift enlisted Oct. 2, 1861, in Company B, 100th Regiment of New York Volunteers. On November 24, 1862, he was assigned duty in the corps hospital in Washington. He was discharged from his re-enlistment on April 4, 1866, and entered his father's mechanical shop business. He married Miss Maria S. Ewell on September 18, 1866.
