Indenture books, 1790-1949.

This series consists of indentures, the legal document signed by a parent or guardian to admit or indenture a child to the Charleston Orphan House. Information includes name of parent or guardian, name and age of child, and the admission and expiration dates of the indenture. A second indenture form was completed when the child was apprenticed, which includes name and age of child, name and occupation of the master, and the term of indenture.

The Charleston Orphan House, the first municipal orphanage in the U.S., was created by an act of the city council on October 18, 1790, at the instigation of council member, John Robertson. By this act, the Orphan House was charged with "supporting and educating poor orphan children, and those of poor distressed and disabled parents, who are unable to maintain them".
