The records document the financial status of Consumers' Research and early attempts to fund a consumer testing agency. Included are audits, audit materials, correspondence, check stubs, passbooks, income and expense reports, budget notes, statement of ownership with circulation statistics, investment materials, and various financial and tax forms. Subjects include banks and banking, CR's financial status, the Bernard Reis/treasurer controversy, donations and donations rejected, appeals to CR subscribers for help, the reserve fund for CR, and early foundation endowments or gifts. The gift files contain material on the early financing of Consumers' Club and CR including initial funding by the Elmhirst Fund and a memo entitled: "For the Establishment of the Consumer Foundation." Early correspondents include Norman Thomas and Colston E. Warne.
