This microfilm contains two personal expense account books owned by Rufus Greene. The first volume dates from 1728-1747, while the second dates from 1748-1774. Both books primarily record personal expenses paid in cash or debits for such items as clothing, china, liquor, food, wood, stationery supplies, and a silk bead quilt. Also included are annual assessments of his assets and debts beginning in 1736. The value of his assets, along with the mention of such extravagances as frequent china purchases and dancing lessons, indicate that he was quite wealthy. Unfortunately, these account books document few details of Greene's business practices, which began in October of 1728 as documented in the front of the first volume. The few entries included indicate that he made gold and silver chains, a "spout cup," and at one point, he owed Paul Revere for the purchase of 12 silver spoons, "being short of [his own] silver."
