Records include minutes of predecessor, merged or related bodies such as the Wilmington Board of Trade (1865-1913), Delaware Board of Pilot Commissioners (1881-1918), and the Mercantile Association (1912-1914). Chamber of Commerce records include minutes, and administrative files which deal primarily with fund raising and the construction of the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce's Wilmington headquarters. Inactive members files contain membership information and scattered correspondence concerning the activities of the Chamber, ca. 1920-1984. Annual reports and other publications are housed in the Imprints Department.

Walter S. Carpenter, Jr., was born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., on January 8, 1888. He graduated from Wyoming Seminary in 1906 and entered Cornell University. He left in 1910 in the middle of his senior year, when he was hired by the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. to go to Chile in connection with the nitrate business.
