Itemized record of debits and credits. Entries consist of account name, date, description of debit or credit, amount, and cross-reference to the Ledger series [MSA S200]. Appropriations are in the form of quarterly payments from the counties, which list bank account into which money was deposited, amount, and interest earned. Also lists patients and the counties responsible for paying their board. Distinguishes black, or "colored" patients. Later volumes contain more detailed expenditures, but do not list patients. For earlier records, see the MARYLAND HOSPITAL FOR THE INSANE Journal series [MSA S0189]. Arranged chronologically.

The Maryland Hospital for the Insane was renamed as Spring Grove State Hospital in 1912 when funds were approriated for additional hospital buildings (Laws of 1912, ch. 187). While the hospital continued unchanged for several years, World War I affected Spring Grove in diverse ways.
