Marriage books, 1803-1918.

The marriage book documents the legal union of man and woman as husband and wife. Before August, 1984, marriage books varied in content and format from county to county and over periods of time. Marriage books created prior to August, 1984 may contain one or more of the following: marriage license, bond, register or return, certificate, and parental permission slip. Many of these records were also maintained as separate series in various counties.

Floyd, the fortieth Kentucky county, was formed in 1799 from parts of Fleming, Mason, and Montgomery Counties. It is named for Colonel John Floyd. Prestonsburg is the county seat. Some records were destroyed in an 1808 courthouse fire. The Floyd County Clerk, whose duties are numerous and diverse, records and maintains various legal instruments and Fiscal Court records.
