Collection of papers of Benson John Lossing, 1825-1906 (bulk 1848-1890).

Original manuscripts of Lossing's published and unpublished works, his travel notebooks, drawings, and sketches. Included are materials related to The American Centenary, The Empire State: A Compendious Hhistory of the Commonwealth of New York, Our Countrymen, or, Brief Memoirs of Eminent Americans, Pictorial Field Book of the Revolution, Pictorial Field-book of the War of 1812, Harper's Popular Cyclopedia of United States History, Universal History, and other works. Also included are pocket notebooksthat Lossing kept during his travels to the battlefields of the Civil War in 1864-1866. Lossing's correspondence, chiefly letters addressed to him, reflecting his literary interests and research methods.
