The collection consists of correspondence, documents, lectures, drafts, research notes, source materials and manuscripts from the research files of Robert Glass Cleland (1885-1957). It includes source materials on Mexico produced for the Doheny Foundation as well as research materials on the North American fur trade; social insurance schemes from the era of the Great Depression such as 30-Thursday, Ham and Eggs Bill and the Retirement Life Payment Act; and Cleland's own writings about the history of California and the Southwest.

Robert Glass Cleland (1885-1957) was an educator, historian and scholar who received his B.A. from Occidental College in 1907 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1912. He served as professor of history and held numerous positions at Occidental College from 1912-1943. Upon retiring from Occidental College, he joined the Permanent Research Group at the Huntington Library.
