John Carter was a birthright Quaker, born in 1800 to John and Rebecca Carter of Deer Creek Monthly Meeting in Maryland. In 1834 he married Sarah Shoemaker, daughter of Nathan and Sarah Shoemaker of Philadelphia. They were members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Southern District and had ten children. Joseph Scattergood was a prominent Quaker, born in 1808 to James and Ann Scattergood of Philadelphia. He was interested in the history of conscientious objection, did work for native American groups in New York State, and started a fund which helped to establish a boarding school, Scattergood Seminary, in 1890. The Henry Bower Chemical Manufacturing Company was formed in 1906 by the merger of the Ammonia Company of Philadelphia, the Kalion Chemical Company and the Baltimore Chrome Works.
