Theodore Wores papers

1881-1967

Letters received, 1884-1967, concern Wores' art work, the Bohemian Club, the work of sculptor Douglas Tilden, and other matters. William Keith writes of his own work and choice of subject matter. Other correspondents include Orrin Peck, Frank Duveneck, Charles Rollo Peters, Mrs. Alexander Russel, Matteo Sandona, and Percy Gray. In addition, there are two scrapbooks, 1881-1938; a typescript of CALIFORNIA ART RESEARCH, 1937-Abstract from WPA Project 2874, which is a monograph on Wores with penciled corrections by him; and 5 articles from THE CENTURY ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE, 1889-1899, 4 of them written by Wores, and 1 illustrated by him.

Frank Duveneck (1848-1919) was a painter and teacher in Munich, Germany and Cincinnati, Ohio. Born in Covington, Ky., he used the surname Decker until 1886. He began his career painting in midwestern Catholic churches. In 1870, Duveneck went to Munich, where he shared a studio with William Merritt Chase, studied with Wilhelm von Diez, and was influenced by the style of the Munich School. Born in Hobart, New York April 13, 1860, son of James and Margaret H. Peck, brother to Helen P. Sanborn and Janet M. (Janet Moore) Peck (b. 1878). His mother Margaret befriended Phoebe Apperson Hearst (1842-1919) on a steamship voyage from Panama to San Francisco, and Orrin became a close friend of Phoebe's son, William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951). Tilden, a sculptor, who lost his hearing and speech at a young age due to scarlet fever, was educated at what would later become the California School for the Deaf (Berkeley), where he later taught.
