Lizzie Loomis letter, 1862.

This collection consists of a letter from Lizzie (Mary Elizabeth) Loomis to her brother, Olly (Oliver S.), who was a bugler in Company C of the 24th Connecticut Infantry Regiment. The letter is written from Colchester, Connecticut, in 1862. In the letter she mentions news of family and friends at home, social events in Colchester, and asks about their brother, William, who is also fighting in the War. She mentions a letter she received which told of fighting at Fort Pulaski in Georgia. Their family friend, Samuel Corey, was a lieutenant in the 7th Connecticut Volunteer Regiment, Company B, under Captain Rodman. The 7th Regiment began its campaign against Fort Pulaski in December, 1861. They used 13-inch mortars to bombard the fort and were the first union soldiers to enter and occupy the captured fort in April, 1862. Also mentioned in the letter are other friends in the 7th Connecticut.

The Loomis family lived in Colchester, Connecticut. Mary Elizabeth Loomis was born around 1841. Her two older brothers, William C. (1836-1896) and Oliver S (b. ca. 1838) both enlisted as musicians during the civil war. William enlisted on October 7, 1861; on October 26 he mustered into the 1st Cavalry Connecticut Regiment, Company C, and a musician. He transferred on May 15, 1862 to Company S and was promoted to Full Principal Musician. Oliver enlisted on September 8, 1862. He joined the 24th Co...
