Typed reminiscences, as told to Irene Persons, of Sally Brown Perkins Dover about her childhood in her white grandfather's Charleston, West Virginia home, the move to white relatives in Dubuque, Iowa at the outset of the Civil War, and life as an African American in Dubuque and, after 1881, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Both Dover's grandmother and father were African American. It also contains comments by her daughter, Mrs. Arthur White, concerning the family's heritage.
