"Whenever application is made to the governor for the parole, pardon, or commutation of sentence of any convict sentenced for a felony, he may at once refer the same, with all recommendations, and any other papers accompanying it, to the attorney general, secretary of state, auditor, as a pardoning board for such action as is hereinafter required." (Ala. Code, Chapter 48, Section 2778 [1923]). This series consists of correspondence and other papers regarding applications for parole, which are sent to members of the Board of Pardons for action. Typical records in this series include copies of correspondence from the secretary of state regarding the receipt of information or the application for parole, letters from county officials and private citizens for or against a parole application, and correspondence from the governor forwarding requests and applications for parole. These records were created under the Board of Pardons (1901-1935) during the administrations of Governor Bibb Graves (1927-1931) and Secretary of State John Marvin Brandon.
