The collection contains correspondence, 1948-1984 particularly that of WIlliam T. Brannon; research files, 1775-1975; and subject files, 1827-1974. Also included are: posters, photographs, handbills, manuscripts (1939-1976), bibliographies, maps, and organizational awards. Secondary material consists of numerous books; documents, 1879, 1940-1976; periodicals; clippings; and several artifacts. Old West characters included in the materials are Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and the Wild Bunch, Jim East, Wyatt Earp, and the James and Younger brothers. Early settlers, fur traders, freighters and miners are among the characters described. William Brannon is the most prominently represented crime author in this collection with his manuscripts, service and author's awards, and books included. He was a writer for King Features Syndicate-True Crimes and Mysteries series. A plaque of NOLA Hall of Fame inductees is included in the collection.

William Tibbetts Brannon (1906-1981), an author, wrote chiefly nonfictional accounts of crimes under his own name and several pseudonyms. His work was syndicated in over 3,000 newspapers through King Features Syndicate. His main magazine markets were "Official Detective," "True Detective," and "Master Detective."
