The Gosse collection. ca. 1823-1954.

The largest element in the collection is the voluminous incoming correspondence of Sir Edmund Gosse (80 boxes). Also present are his literary manuscripts; personalia, drawings, and photographs; many books from his library; and a facsimile of 'The Book of Gosse' (his visitors book), together with a great number of original visiting cards recording his friends and acquaintances. Material relating to other members of the family includes: (i) A biography of Thomas Gosse and some of his letters; (ii) printed and manuscript items by or relating to P.H. Gosse, including 'Letters from Jamaica, 1844-45'; (iii) two copies of Emily Gosse's 'Hymns and Sacred Poems' along with biographies and two diaries; (iv) several printed items by Ellen Gosse, including a proof copy of 'At the tip of Jutland' corrected by Edmund Gosse, one diary, and a number of letters; (v) printed items by P.H.G. Gosse, including an autographed, limited edition of 'My Pirate Library', manuscript items, and several letters; and (vi) several letters by and printed items relating to (Laura) Sylvia Gosse, including 17 exhibition catalogues and critical writings, together with 22 original artworks, most of which were donated by her to the Brotherton Library.

59 bound manuscript items, 108 boxes containing manuscript material (including 90 boxes of correspondence) along with photographs, drawings, and personalia, 2 folders, 1 poster roll, and 145 bound printed items.

Edmund Gosse, a well known man of letters, librarian to the House of Lords (1904-1914), and author of the autobiography, Father and Son (1907), was a pioneering translator of Ibsen and author of numerous volumes of poetry, criticism and biography.
