This collection consists of studies, notebooks, correspondence, memoranda, annual reports, hearings, brochures, articles, maps, and surveys, 1910-1973. They concern transportation, urban planning, traffic, sewer and water, parks, historic preservation, and zoning in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Region. Included are works of organizations such as the Committee of 100 on the Federal City, the National Capital Planning Commission, Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Public Buildings Commission, District of Columbia Board of Commissioners, and the Northwest Committee for Transportation Planning.There is extensive material dealing with specific lawsuits against freeways, including the North Central Freeway (never built) and I-66. There are official an unofficial reports of all aspects of transportation: highways, bridges, buses, streetcars, and subways, including projects contemplated but never accomplished, such as an architect's proposal for a circular elevated monorail.

Peter Stebbins Craig was a lawyer in Washington, D.C. who led legal challenges against the construction of interstate highways through the city in the 1960s abd 1970s. Taking the side of residents whose homes would be razed for new freeways, Craig successfully battled developers, business leaders, and members of Congress to block seven multilane highways that would have destroyed 200,000 housing units within the city.
