[The code of Handsome Lake]: manuscript, ca. 1880.

This is a manuscript of Edward Cornplanter's recounting of the teachings and precepts of Handsome Lake (1735-1815), a prominent religious teacher and reformer among the Iroquois. Although the "Code of Handsome Lake" was first recited circa 1800, this particular manuscript appears to have been compiled circa 1880. Written in the Seneca language, this volume does not contain the "Code of Handsome Lake" in its entirety, but only sections 94-131. This volume also contains notes on the history of the Iroquois Indians that was added in 1905. This volume is accompanied by a manuscript letter of Edward Cornplanter to an unidentified person, February 20, 1909.
