J. Joseph Herbert was born in Lafayette, Indiana on August 26, 1894. He attended Lafayette College in Pennsylvania before coming to the University of Michigan where he graduated from the literary college in 1915 and the law school in 1917. He served as an Army officer in World War I then began his law practice in Manistique in 1920.
