Herbert H. Lee Photographs : Events 1917-1919, 1940, 1945

The slides and photographs in this series depict six separate events in Atlanta. The largest collection of slides in this series depicts a parade through downtown Atlanta on "Heroes Day" on May 24, 1945, an event honoring members of the First Army and their commander, General Courtney Hodges, a Georgia native. Another set of images within this series is the November 3, 1940 Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus at the Highland Avenue showgrounds. These circus photographs show the unloading process of elephants moving wagons onto the railroad train, tent set-up, the mess hall, and various spectators. Photographer Lee and his wife attended many Sunday circus events during the 1930s and early 1940s. Other events include a Confederate veterans parade, the aftermath of the Atlanta fire of 1917, and memorial events after the death of President Franklin Roosevelt.
