Luther Thompson's letter accompanies an unfinished letter, (AL fragment, Ophir, Dec. 10, 1850) from "Russell" reporting the death of Mrs. Thompson's "dear companion" (presumably husband) of cholera, describing in some detail the deceased's poor health for some time prior to his death. Russell's letter is unfinished, stopping in mid-sentence. Luther Thompson's letter (ALS, Ophir, Dec. 13, 1850), reports the death of Russell, also of cholera. According to Luther Thompson, Russell was taken ill while writing to Mrs. Thompson.
