Michelson (1925-2011) served in the Army Air Corps as a radar repairman from 1943 to 1946. He married Lois in 1951 and they had two sons. Michelson earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Pennsylvania, taught English at Augsburg College (Minnesota) for two years, and eventually settled in Stevens Point (Wisconsin) where he taught English at the University of Wisconsin until 1990.
