Born in San Francisco, Julia Morgan (1872-1957) grew up in Oakland in a spacious Victorian house. Gifted in mathematics and encouraged in her studies by her mother, Morgan was influenced to become an architect by her mother's cousin, Pierre Le Brun, who designed an early skyscraper, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower in Manhattan. Edward Bright Hussey (1897-1976) graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in architecture in 1923. He worked during the summers for Julia Morgan, and spent the summer of 1921 in San Simeon working on the Hearst Castle. Hussey was the on-site architect for a number of Morgan projects, including the Honolulu YWCA and the Tokyo YWCA.
