Letter from Johnson Howell to Peter H. Burnett, 1850.

The item is a facsimile of a letter from Johnson Howell to Governor Burnett of California. In the letter, Howell reports the murder by pistol shot of Robert Campbell on September 1, and requests on behalf of the standing committee that the governor offer a reward for the capture of the murderer, whom Howell identifies as William Ewing, another emigrant from Missouri. He also provides a physical description of Ewing. A note written on the letter by the governor's secretary indicates that the Governor answered that he could not offer the reward.

The reasons for secession were the rampant lawlessness in the town and anger over a mining tax. The addressee of the letter, Peter H. Burnett, was governor of California from 1849 to 1851. Robert Campbell came to Rough And Ready from Missouri. Fro...
