Reproductions of glass paintings by Thomas Gainsborough. 1999.

These duratrans transparencies reproduce transparencies painted in oil on glass by Gainsborough, conserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum. They were viewed in a specially designed 'showbox', positioned between an adjustable lens at the front and a silk diffusing screen lit by 3 candles at the back (cf. Paintings...). Gainsborough used these landscapes on glass to plan major compositions and explore lighting effects. The subjects of the paintings include a cottage in moonlight, a pond in moonlight, two scenes of an estuary with sailing boat, a downland scene with a river and a bridge, a hilly scene with a lake, and various woodland scenes.

12 transparencies : color ; 33.5 x 27.5 cm.
