[Eiffel Tower commemorative medal]. 1889.

A commemorative medal by C. Trotin. The medal was created as a souvenir for visitors who ascended the Eiffel tower during the 1889 International Exposition in Paris. The obverse depicts the Eiffel Tower in the foreground, with ten landmark structures behind it including a pyramid, the Washington Monument, and Saint Paul's Cathedral, among others. Letters above the image read: Les travaux ont commencé le 27 Janv. 1887; le monument a été inauguré le 6 Mai 1889. Letters below identify the eleven structures and give the height of each. The name of the artist appears along the lower right edge. The reverse reads: Souvenir de mon ascension au sommet de la Tour Eiffel; a blank cartouche and the date 1889 appear below. The letters Cuivre appear along the upper edge of the medal, while the lower edge reads: Usine Metallurgique Parisienne.
