Statements on the subject, prepared for the Bancroft Library, by Aaron M. Burns, Dr. J.D.B. Stillman, Dr. William H. Rogers, Hall McAllister, Rev. Sylvester Woodbridge, a Presbyterian minister, also comments on religious life in California and his church in Benicia. Included also is a statement from Asa Bowen on his service during the Mexican War under Kearney's command.

The San Francisco Committees of Vigilance of 1851 and 1856 were formed when crime became widespread in the city of San Francisco in the wake of the Gold Rush.
