Leslie Viereck papers, ca. 1958-1969.

The Leslie Viereck papers consist of correspondence and research files including reprints, pamphlets, speeches and presentations, newsclippings, notes and news releases. The materials relate to Project Chariot, the Atomic Energy Commission's plan to create a harbor at Cape Thompson, Alaska, by the use of a nuclear detonation. Viereck's research files include materials on fallout, radioactive food chains and Project Chariot. Correspondence in the collection relates to Project Chariot and Cape Thompson in general, and also includes correspondence about radiation ecology and correspondence with and about Viereck's fellow Project Chariot colleague Don C. Foote. There are also photographic slides documenting the 1954 Mt. McKinley climb by George Argus, Elton Thayer, Leslie Viereck and Morton Wood.

Don Charles Foote was born in 1931. He received an M.A. and a Ph. D. in Human Geography from McGill University in 1958 and 1965 respectively. Foote moved to Alaska in 1959 and spent two years in Point Hope employed as a researcher for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and a third year researching the history of the Point Hope area, particularly as it related to whaling. His research for the AEC convinced him of the dangers of a proposal to use nuclear weapons to blast a harbor near Point Hope. ...
