An unpublished account of European history from the accession of John V of Portugal (1707) to the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht (1713). In essence, the Memorias consist of the second part of da Cunha's Idêa da guerra (cf. Fernán Núñez collection, v. 58), with a few minor alterations, and a new dedication to the Queen.

Luis da Cunha (1662-1740) had a long and highly successful diplomatic career. In 1696 he went as Ambassador to London, and subsequently served as Portuguese minister plenipotentiary at the negotiations which led up to the Treaty of Utrecht. In the following year he represented John V at the coronation of George I in London, and was later Ambassador in Madrid and Paris where he remained until his death.
