John Livingston Hopkins was born near Beaufort, South Carolina. The family moved to Sapelo Island, Georgia, when he was a small boy. They later lived on Belleville plantation on Sapelo River, McIntosh County. J.L. Hopkins was a lawyer. He killed McQueen McIntosh in a duel in 1819 and served a prison term for it.
