This collection contains correspondence to and from the office of Bishop Herbert Chilstrom regarding the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Constituting Convention and biennial Churchwide Assemblies. Also included are some news clippings and newsletters regarding the assemblies. Correspondents include the Justice Network of the Lutheran Church, members and pastors of individual ELCA congregations, the Lutheran World Federation, ELCA synod bishops, voting members of the assemblies, international Lutheran and other denominational church leaders, and Lutheran college and seminary presidents. Subjects covered in the correspondence include costs of sending voting members to the assemblies, invitations to the assemblies, programming plans for the assemblies, requests for transcripts and audio copies of speeches given at the assemblies, discussion of the dynamics of integrating three separate church bodies (the American Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church in America, and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches) into one working church body, tithing, ELCA budgets, and abortion.
