James Penrose Harland papers, 1906-1969.

From the time he was 15 years old until several years before his death in 1973, James Penrose Harland maintained a diary, journal, or daily log in which he recorded a few notes about each day's events. These yearly volumes, written in his own hand, comprise the bulk of the collection. Also included are clippings, photographs, postcards, and some correspondence.

James Penrose Harland was a graduate of the Princeton University Class of 1913. Following graduation he went on to become a professor of classical archaeology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1923-1945. In 1926 Harland secured a grant from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fund and spent a year excavating on the Greek island of Aigina, eventually publishing his findings in the study PREHISTORIC AIGINA in 1966.
