The material in this collection records imports, exports, and orders of goods generated and/or received by the Vernons. Such products as rum,sugar, molasses, wine, cheese, indigo, nails, glass bottles and flasks, wigs, cotton, cloth, candles, flour, chocolate, coffee, dry goods, and kitchenware are represented. Import fees and percentages received by commission merchants are often recorded. Letters detail such facets of trade as problems with credit, payments lost in the mail, spoilage of food products, and transportation of goods. Other items in the collection document costs associated with operating ships and brigs. Some of the bills and receipts are for personal products needed by members of the Vernon family, including clothing, shoes, lighting equipment, a coffeepot, and items for the kitchen. There are two bills for schools attended by Vernon children.

Samuel Vernon (1683-1737) and his wife, Elizabeth Fleet, lived in Newport, Rhode Island, where he held many public offices. Their eight children included Samuel (1711-1792), Thomas (1718-1784), and William (1719-1806). Thomas, a merchant and royal postmaster, was a Loyalist during the American Revolution.
