Richard M. Peabody Gargoyle Magazine collection, circa 1970-1993.

Collection contains material accumulated and generated by Richard Peabody, specifically during his tenure as founder, editor and publisher of Paycock Press (1976-1990). The collection primarily consists of reference material, such as community arts promotional literature and literary publications, in which some of Peabody's work appears and which he used as source material. Also contained is correspondence from contributing authors and artists to Gargoyle Magazine. Graphics, negatives and page mechanicals document the production of Gargoyle and other Paycock Press publications. The collection is an excellent resource for information on literary organizations and cultural institutions during the 1970s and 1980s. This collection is part of the Washington Writers Archives (WWA) in the Gelman Library Special Collections.

Charles Bukowski was born on August 16, 1920 in Andernach, Germany, the son of a US soldier and German woman. His family immigrated to the United States in 1922 and settled in Los Angeles, where Bukowski spent most of his life. After a brief marriage to Barbara Frye, the rich publisher of a small poetry magazine, Bukowski began in 1958 twelve years of work as a Post Office clerk.
