Murray Barnson Emeneau was born in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on February 28, 1904. He received bachelors degrees from Dalhousie, (1923) and Oxford (1926) Universities, and a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1931. He was a research scholar and lecturer at Yale before undertaking extensive field work in South and Central India. (1936-1938), where he specialized in non-Dravidian languages.
